2 men arrested, indicted for murder of USPS mail carrier in Warren

Warren resident Kaprise Sledge, 24, and 44-year-old Thomas Sledge of Youngstown were arrested Thursday in connection to the murder of 33-year-old Jonte Davis.

CLEVELAND — Two men have been arrested and charged in connection to the March murder of a United States Postal Service mail carrier in Warren.

Warren resident Kaprise Sledge, 24, and 44-year-old Thomas Sledge of Youngstown were indicted on Oct. 2 and arrested Thursday, according to federal court records. The men are accused of fatally shooting 33-year-old Jonte Davis while he was inside his USPS van on March 2.

The pair were each charged with one count of murder of an officer and employee of the United States and one count of discharge of a firearm during a crime of violence.

Warren police say they were dispatched to the 600 block of Olive Avenue Northeast after reports of shots being fired at around 1:44 p.m. Upon arriving at the scene, officers found a Davis with a gunshot wound.

Police said Davis had been shot by a suspect in another vehicle while he was inside his U.S. postal van. A few hours after the shooting, Warren police said they located the suspect vehicle in a driveway at 429 Maryland Avenue Northeast.

If convicted of the charges, Kaprise Sledge and Thomas Sledge face a maximum of life in prison.

The United States Postal Inspection Service is investigating the case, with help from multiple local agencies. It is being prosecuted by the United States Attorney's Office for the Northern District of Ohio.
