CLEVELAND — The two men arrested for the mass shooting that took place in Cleveland's Warehouse District earlier this month have been indicted by a Cuyahoga County grand jury.
Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Michael O'Malley announced on Wednesday that 25-year-old Jaylon Jennings and 24-year-old Kevin Del Valle-Salaman were indicted on multiple counts, including attempted murder and felonious assault. The pair will be arraigned at the Cuyahoga County Justice Center at a later date.
Jennings was indicted on the following:
- Nine Counts of Attempted Murder
- 18 Counts of Felonious Assault
- Two counts of Having a Weapon Under Disability
- One count of Grand Theft
- One count of Receiving Stolen Property
Del Valle-Salaman was indicted on the following:
- Nine counts of Attempted Murder
- 18 counts of Felonious Assault
- One count of Obstructing Justice
“Guns are destroying this community one shot at a time. People in this county should be able to pump gas or enjoy a night out without the fear of being shot,” said O’Malley in a statement. “The idiot who fired into the crowd on West 6th Street will answer for his actions, so must everyone else who is pointing guns at innocent people.”
Law enforcement officials say that Jennings and Del Valle-Salaman left the Rumor Bar and Lounge on West 6th Street at around 2 a.m. on July 9. They walked to Del Valle-Salaman's car that was parked nearby, where Jennings then grabbed a gun and walked back to West 6th. Jennings apparently waited for some of the victims to exit Rumor Bar and Lounge and then fired multiple shots in their direction at approximately 2:24 a.m.
A total of nine people were injured in the shooting:
- 23-year-old man; shot in forearm
- 29-year-old man; shot in leg
- 26-year-old man; shot in wrist and lower body
- 24-year-old woman; shot in both feet
- 38-year-old man; shot in leg
- 23-year-old woman; shot in knee
- 27-year-old man; shot in both legs
- 26-year-old man; shot in leg
- 24-year-old man; shot in knee
Following the shooting, authorities say the two men ran back to Del Valle-Salaman's vehicle and fled the scene. U.S. Marshals arrested Jennings on July 11. His bond was set at $9 million. Meanwhile, Del Valle-Salaman was arrested on July 15 and his bond was set at $5 million.
In the release announcing the indictment, O'Malley's office noted that the investigation revealed that eight of the shooting victims appeared to be part of a targeted group., with one nearby victim also struck. The finding that the shooting was targeted and not random is different from what Cleveland Police Chief Wayne Drummond initially told 3News' Russ Mitchell on July 10. Drummond said at the time that the shooting was "not targeted," but added "that may change."
