AKRON, Ohio — A 54-year-old man is in custody after police say he threatened a group of peaceful protesters and nearly ran some over with his motorcycle.

According to authorities, around 40 protesters against racism and police brutality were gathered in front of Kelvington's Auto on Newton Street on Wednesday when Garry Rutherford was seen revving the engine of his Harley Davidson bike while "driving recklessly." He then allegedly sped the vehicle into the crowd, with numerous people later claiming he threatened to kill them all.

While several at the protest say they were almost hit, no one was hurt. Officers at the scene stopped Rutherford and arrested him, and say they found a metal rod and "drug paraphernalia" on his person.

Rutherford faces charges of carrying a concealed weapon, menacing, inducing panic, and drug paraphernalia. He was arraigned Thursday morning in Akron Municipal Court and is currently being held at the Summit County Jail on $5,000 bond.
