Akron police: 2 people shot outside funeral home

Police say the injuries are non-life-threatening. The shooting happened following a memorial service at the Newcomer Farley Funeral Home.

AKRON, Ohio — The Akron Police Department is investigating a shooting that took place outside of a funeral home following a memorial service on Friday afternoon. Two people have been confirmed shot.

According to a release from Akron police,  the incident took place in the parking lot of the Newcomer Farley Funeral Home on North Canton Road around 3:30 p.m. Officers and EMS personnel arrived to find a 33-year-old man with a gunshot wound to the leg. The victim was taken to Summa Health Akron City Hospital.

Minutes later, police say a 29-year-old man also arrived at the hospital also having suffered a gunshot wound in the leg. 

Police say both injuries are not life-threatening.

"Detectives are working to identify the person or persons responsible for this senseless shooting," added Akron Police Captain Michael Miller in the statement.

3News' Neil Fischer reached out to new Akron Mayor Shammas Malik for a reaction to the shooting. His office provided the below statement:

“Any incident of gun violence in our community is a tragedy. I’m only grateful that in this case the injuries sustained were not life threatening. Safety is the top priority of my administration and incidents like this only further underscore the need for that focus. We won’t be able to stop violence overnight, but in the weeks and months ahead I will be sharing much more about how we plan to make Akron a safer community for all.”
