GARFIELD HEIGHTS, Ohio — Ian Rich, a 29-year-old Newburgh Heights man accused of a deadly shooting on I-77 in Cuyahoga Heights, made his first court appearance on Monday in Garfield Heights.
Rich was charged with murder, felonious assault, and improperly handling firearms in Garfield Heights Municipal Court. Bond was set at $2 million and the case was bound over to a Cuyahoga County grand jury.
Police say the shooting that left one man dead and a woman injured, took place around 9:25 p.m. on I-77 South just south of the Grant Avenue on-ramp.
David Perez Jr., 57, was killed, while Jacquline Perez was taken to MetroHealth Medical Center where she was treated and released. Both victims are from Garfield Heights.
After putting out a warning that Rich should be considered armed and dangerous, Newburgh Heights Police Chief John T. Majoy says Rich was ultimately arrested in Bratenahl.
It was around 10:50 p.m. when Bratenahl officers reported seeing the suspect's vehicle driving westbound on I-90. They conducted a traffic stop and detained him at the scene.
