STRONGSVILLE, Ohio — Viktor Vendler, a 22-year-old, has been arrested by Cleveland Metroparks police in connection with the murder of 74-year-old Leroy Johnston.
The incident dates back to Sept. 30, 2023, when Johnston's body was discovered with a gunshot wound in a remote wooded area at Mill Stream Run Reservation in Strongsville. Police say that the investigation revealed that Vendler and Johnston were allegedly acquaintances.
Vendler, who was charged with aggravated murder, was arraigned in Berea Municipal Court on Wednesday morning and is being held on a $1 million bond. Additionally, Vendler is banned from Cleveland Metroparks property.
“I’m proud of the skillful work of our Detective Bureau to bring closure to this case,” said Cleveland Metroparks Police Chief Kelly Stillman. “The successful resolution of this case, bringing justice to the family of Mr. Johnson, is a testament to the commitment and dedication of our detectives and officers who have worked diligently on this investigation.”
According to the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner's Office, the death of Johnston, who was a resident of Shaker Heights, was ruled a homicide from a gunshot wound to the head.
