TUSCARAWAS COUNTY, Ohio — One person was shot and another arrested amid an overnight chase in Tuscarawas County.
Authorities say the situation started around 11 p.m. Sunday when a trooper with the New Philadelphia Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol (OSHP) conducted a traffic stop on a 2014 Ford Explorer for a turn signal violation on I-77 near exit 87 for Strasburg.
The vehicle exited the interstate and pulled over in a gas station parking lot.
“After making contact with the suspect vehicle, the trooper requested backup,” according to a press release from the OSHP. “Once backup arrived on the scene, the rear-seat passenger exited the suspect vehicle before it fled from the parking lot and a pursuit ensued.”
The Tuscarawas County Sheriff’s Office set up stop sticks at multiple intersections in an attempt to stop the vehicle.
“At the intersection of Blacksnake Hill Road and Schneiders Crossing Road, the suspect vehicle came to a stop before the stop sticks and then accelerated toward two deputies,” authorities said. “One of the deputies fired their weapon at the suspect vehicle, striking the front seat passenger.”
The pursuit continued for a short distance until the vehicle came to a stop on state Route 212.
The driver was identified as 43-year-old Carl E. Brown of Gnadenhutten. He was taken to the Tuscarawas County Jail on felony charges of failure to comply and felonious assault. The OSHP says he was also found to have multiple arrest warrants and no valid driver’s license.
The front seat passenger was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
No officers were hurt in the incident, which remains under investigation.
