WILLOUGHBY, Ohio — A 22-year-old man is in custody following a multi-car crash early Thursday morning in Willoughby.
Police first arrived at BMA Media Group on Erie Street just before 2 a.m. Officials say a red Dodge pickup truck rear-ended a Jeep Latitude while making a wide left turn, causing both to careen into the storefront window and shatter it.
The first officer on scene reported the Dodge was attempting to leave the scene of the accident, and despite an attempted traffic stop the truck sped away eastbound. Authorities later traced the plates to a man in Mentor and later found the pickup at his address, but he had ran away into the woods.
Following a period of "several hours," a Willoughby patrol officer found the suspect walking somewhere in the city and arrested him. He was subsequently transported to University Hospitals Lake West Medical Center with unknown injuries.
The driver of the Jeep, a 26-year-old woman, remained on the scene after suffering facial injuries. She was taken by ambulance to Lake West, as well.
Charges are still pending for the still-unnamed suspect, but police believe he was drunk at the time of the crash. The Willoughby city prosecutor is currently reviewing the case.
