Man who stabbed clinician at Signature Health in Maple Heights pleads guilty to attempted murder

Jason Halasz Jr., 25, stabbed and critically injured the worker while being treated at the clinic back in April.

CLEVELAND — A man who stabbed a clinician at Signature Health in Maple Heights earlier this year has agreed to plead guilty to attempted murder.

Prosecutors agreed to drop two other charges of felonious assault against 25-year-old Jason Halasz Jr., of Independence. Details of the plea agreement were finalized on Wednesday, with both the prosecution and the defense previously arranging to delay a trial that had been set to begin on Oct. 21.

According to Maple Heights police, Halasz was a patient at Signature Health back on April 24 when he stabbed the clinician who was helping treat him. The worker then ran out of the clinic room and was stabbed by Halasz again before security was finally able to apprehend Halasz.

The clinician suffered critical injuries, but survived. Halasz's bond was eventually reduced from $2 million to $250,000, but he has remained in the Cuyahoga County Jail since the stabbing.

Following the incident, the Maple Heights clinic was closed for the remainder of the week. Signature Health CEO Jonathan Lee also released a statement expressing sympathy for the victim and pledging cooperation with the authorities.

Halasz is due to be sentenced on Nov. 25.
