Mother among 2 arrested for murder of Cleveland 5-year-old who was found malnourished

Kamryn Riley was found starving with multiple injuries before dying at the hospital, and officials say she was living in 'deplorable and unsanitary conditions.'

CLEVELAND — Cleveland police have confirmed to 3News that two people have been arrested for murder in connection with the death of a 5-year-old girl two weeks ago, with the child's mother among those charged.

Court records show 24-year-old Janicea Brooks and 32-year-old Collyn Green, who both live at the same Forest Avenue address, were taken to the Cuyahoga County Jail on Wednesday. Previous reports from the county Department of Children and Family Services named Brooks as the mom of young Kamryn Riley.

Kamryn was pronounced dead at UH Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital on March 22, and police subsequently acknowledged they were investigating the case as potentially being abuse. A signed statement from DCFS later confirmed she had been malnourished at the time of her death and suffered from various injuries, which were redacted from the documents.

Authorities claim Brooks has mental health issues "which she is not properly addressing," and three other children were removed from the Forest Avenue home and are now said to be safe in the care of another family member. Officials also noted "deplorable and unsanitary conditions" inside the house, including feces spread on ceilings and walls, soiled beds, and a bug infestation.

The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner's autopsy into Kamryn's death remains ongoing. Both Brooks and Green appeared in Cleveland Municipal Court Thursday morning and were issued bonds of $500,000 each.
