CLEVELAND — The Cleveland Division of Police says it has arrested a 15-year-old juvenile who is suspected of shooting a 15-year-old student outside of Cleveland Central Catholic High School on Friday.
The shooting in the 6600 block of Baxter Avenue happened just after 2:45 p.m.
According to the Diocese of Cleveland, the teen who was shot is a student at the high school and was hit by what was initially believed to have been a pellet gun as classes were dismissed. After administrators called 911, the boy was taken from the scene via ambulance, accompanied by a teacher. The student remains hospitalized as of Monday.
On Saturday, police determined that a weapon other than a pellet gun was likely involved.
Officers from the Cleveland Division of Police's Fourth District immediately began an investigation and search for the suspect. Police leaders say detectives from the Fourth District Violent Crime Reduction Team (VCRT), and 1st and 3rd Districts, worked in partnership with federal partners and Cleveland Heights police department in an effort to locate the suspect.
The suspect was taken into custody on Sunday evening without incident. An arraignment was set to take place on Monday in Cuyahoga County Juvenile Court.
On Saturday, the Diocese of Cleveland announced that "out of an abundance of caution" all on-campus activities were canceled for Saturday, including the Cleveland Central Catholic High School football game being moved to an off-campus location with no spectators. The school also announced that the homecoming dance will be rescheduled for a later date.
Additionally, only faculty were required to report to the school on Monday as all classes were canceled.
