AKRON, Ohio — Police in Springfield Township are investigating after an argument between two Walmart employees allegedly led to an officer being assaulted.
According to a release from the Springfield Township Police Department, the incident at the Walmart on South Arlington Road Saturday began as a dispute between two women who work as online store shoppers. Police say the two had argued earlier in the day, but then separated.
The tensions escalated later in the day when one of the employees returned to the store from making an online delivery. The other worker, identified as Tonjreonna Mayhand, allegedly took out a gun and made "racially charged threats" towards the returning employee. Police say a store employee and another person witnessed the encounter.
A Lakemore police officer, who was on duty at Walmart, was made aware of Mayhand and another suspect in her car in the parking lot by "a concerned citizen." When the officer attempted to detain the pair for questioning, police say he was "physically assaulted" by Michelle Wright, who was arrested after a struggle.
Wright complained of a shoulder injury and was taken to an area hospital. She was later transported to the Summit County Jail and charged with felony assault of a police officer.
Meanwhile, police say they searched Mayhand's vehicle and found a Smith and Wesson 9mm handgun, which was confiscated as evidence. Mayhand was charged with a misdemeanor count of aggravated menacing.
"The Springfield Township Police Department emphasizes its commitment to ensuring the safety and security of all individuals within the community," Springfield Township Police Chief Jack Simone added in the release.
Police add that the investigation into the incident "remains ongoing."
