Suspect accused of murdering 16-year-old Euclid boy pleads not guilty

Bond for Jay Sean Vance was set at $1 million, but due to a probation hold, he will remain in jail for the duration of the case.

CLEVELAND — The 20-year-old man accused of murdering Euclid teen Keshaun Lamar last month appeared in Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court on Monday for his arraignment and entered a plea of not guilty.

Jay Shan Vance is facing several charges, including aggravated murder and murder. Bond for Vance was set at $1 million, however due to a probation hold from a previous case, he must remain in jail for the duration of his trial.

Lamar's mother spoke during the arraignment and argued for no bond to be issued for Vance.

"There should be no bond set for this individual (Vance). It's taken almost a month for him to be captured in order for us to be here today. I feel like if he has a chance to run or to flee, it would be possible for him to do so if bond is set. I would be at peace if he was still behind bars today," she said.

"He's (Vance) not gonna get out," Judge John Russo replied. "He won't leave the county jail until this case gets resolved."

According to Euclid Police Department Capt. Mitch Houser, Keshaun Lamar was killed in the early morning hours of October 1 in the 27500 block of Brush Avenue. Lamar was taken to Cleveland Clinic Hillcrest Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, according to the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner's Office.

A juvenile suspect was taken into custody on the same day as Lamar's death.

On October 24, a Cuyahoga County grand jury indicted Vance on the following charges:

  • Aggravated murder
  • Murder (3 counts)
  • Aggravated robbery (2 counts)
  • Robbery (2 counts)
  • Felonious assault (3 counts)
  • Grand theft
  • Tampering with evidence
  • Having weapons under disability

Vance was captured last week by members of the U.S. Marshals' Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force in the 13400 block of 5th Avenue in East Cleveland.

A pre-trial hearing for Vance has been set for November 13.
