MANSFIELD, Ohio — The Ohio State Highway Patrol has announced the arrest of a 38-year-old man wanted for the fatal hit-and-run of a 13-year-old boy in Richland County.
The incident happened Sunday at around 9:15 a.m. on Bowman Road in Cass Township. A truck was headed north on the Richland County street when it struck the victim, 13-year-old Luke Newswanger, while he was riding his bike. The driver of the pickup truck fled the scene and the victim later died from his injuries.
After the incident, troopers put out a description of the suspect vehicle, believed to be a black or dark green cab pickup truck with damage to the center to the passenger side area of the truck. The vehicle was described as an early 2000's GMC or Chevrolet with red tape in place of one of the taillights. Troopers say numerous tips came into the OSHP's Mansfield Post with sightings of possible vehicles fitting the description.
A follow-up on leads and additional investigation led to the arrest of 38-year-old Bud D. Thornsberry of Shiloh. Thornsberry approached troopers while they were out looking for him. His vehicle was also seized and held as evidence.
Thornsberry has been charged with aggravated vehicular assault, tampering with evidence and failure to stop after an accident causing death, all felonies. He was arraigned on Monday morning in the Shelby Municipal Court.
