RAVENNA, Ohio — A suspect who attacked officers outside of the Ravenna Police Department and attempted to grab a gun is facing felony charges.
According to a press release from the Ravenna police, on July 13, Matthew Ziegler drove to the station on South Parkway at 10:02 p.m. He stopped his vehicle in the roadway and got out, then apparently started to vandalize one of the Ravenna police cruisers that was parked in front of the station.
Surveillance video shows two officers rushing out of the station to confront Ziegler. He immediately charged into the first officer, attempting to strike him in the face. The second officer pulled out his Taser and deployed it at Ziegler, who was not affected. The suspect continued to swing with closed fists at police.
You can watch the surveillance video below:
As the struggled continued, Ziegler grabbed one of the officers around the neck and they both fell to the ground. While they were battling, Ziegler tried to take the officer's gun. "He's going for my gun. He's going for my gun," the officer can be heard shouting on body camera video.
"Does he have your gun?," the other officer asked. "I got it. I got it in my holster," was the response by his fellow Ravenna officers.
Other officers arrived at the scene to help place Ziegler into custody. "Are you done fighting?," one of the officers asked. "Now I am," Ziegler replied.
Ziegler was charged with attempted aggravated murder, a first-degree felony, and was taken to the Portage County Jail. More charges are expected.
