AKRON, Ohio — A Wayne County resident has been sentenced to between seven and 9 1/2 years in prison for stealing an RV and instigating a police chase in what the Summit County Prosecutor’s office described as a "rampage."
Smithville native Randy Schiffbauer, 25, had previously pleaded guilty to four different felony charges related to the RV incident. Summit County Prosecutor Sherri Bevan Walsh's office said Schiffbauer stole a motorhome and led law enforcement on a chase through Akron in June of last year.
The chase began on Interstate 77 and continued as Schiffbauer exited the highway at Arlington Road. Prosecutor's said Schiffbauer drove erratically and struck several vehicles as he veered off the road and onto sidewalks and lawns.
According to authorities, Schiffbauer was only stopped when officers deployed stop sticks and the stolen RV became stuck on a Maplewood Drive resident's lawn. 3News obtained video of the chase when the story broke last June.
In addition to a robbery charge, first and second-degree felonious assault, and failure to comply, Schiffbauer also pled guilty to a fourth-degree felony charge of receiving stolen property in an unrelated case.
