Ohio Lt. Gov. Jon Husted tests negative for COVID-19 after attending Tuesday night's debate in Cleveland

Both President Trump and the first lady have tested positive for the coronavirus since the event.

CLEVELAND — Ohio Lt. Gov. Jon Husted has tested negative for COVID-19 after attending the Tuesday night presidential debate in Cleveland.

Gov. Mike DeWine's office confirmed the results Friday night. Both the governor and his wife Fran were also tested out of an abundance of caution, and both were negative as well.

According to Husted, while he was in the Samson Pavilion with several members of the Trump family who were spotted not wearing face masks, he did decide to keep his own mask on during the entire debate.

"I'm self quarantined at home out of an abundance of caution," Husted said during Friday's press conference, "I did not come within 50 feet of President Trump or anybody that was part of the group."

This did not stop the lieutenant governor from being tested early on Friday morning. While awaiting results, he joked that his lack of access was actually beneficial.

"I guess it was one of those times where not having a good seat was a good thing."

DeWine was not in Cleveland with Trump or Husted on Tuesday, but he and his wife both met with the president during a campaign event last month. DeWine said he and the Ohio first lady were both wearing masks at the time, but the president himself was not.
