With Wednesday, May 6, marking the start of National Nurses Week coinciding with the coronavirus (COVID-19) crisis, financial website WalletHub.com examined which states are the best for nurses to work in.
And the findings weren't favorable to Ohio.
Using 22 key metrics, WalletHub ranked all 50 states in the U.S., with Ohio placing 44th -- the seventh-lowest in the country. While the Buckeye State did rank 20th in "opportunity and competition," its score was weighed down by placing No. 49 -- second-worst -- in "work environment."
Weighted factors considered in the scores included average starting salary, annual average salary, health care facilities per capita, states offering the most coronavirus support, ratio of nurses to hospital beds and quality of public hospital system. You can find the full methodology here.
In the overall rankings, Oregon placed first, followed by Washington, New Mexico, Minnesota and Nevada. New York ranked 50th, with Louisiana, Hawaii, Alabama, Oklahoma and Vermont being the only other states to place worse than Ohio.
