10-year-old boy dies in Akron shooting: What we know

Authorities say it happened at a home on Dayton Street.

AKRON, Ohio — Authorities are investigating after a 10-year-old boy was killed in an Akron shooting Thursday afternoon.

It was around 4:58 p.m. when Akron police responded to the scene in the 100 block of Dayton Street where officers found the child in an upstairs bedroom with a gunshot wound to the head.

He was pronounced dead at the scene at 5:36 p.m. Akron Public Schools confirmed Friday afternoon, that the victim has been identified as Kismet Sengdan; a 4th grade student at Harris Jackson CLC in North Hill.

"Based on the preliminary investigation, it would suggest that one or more children were handling a firearm and there was an unintentional discharge causing the death of the child," said Lt. Michael Miller with the Akron Police Department. "It couldn't be more tragic."

Miller stated that no other individuals were found in the home when police initially arrived on scene, but police later learned that at least one other child, around the same age of the victim, was at the home during the incident. The victim did not live in the home.

"This is just a tragedy," said Miller.

An investigation is underway to determine the owner of the weapon.

"Whoever owns [the gun], there would be a review of the circumstances around that and we would evaluate what charges, if any, would apply."

It's the second young child to die in a Northeast Ohio shooting this week. Cleveland police previously reported the shooting death of an 11-year-old boy in an unrelated incident early Wednesday morning.
