AKRON, Ohio — A 24-year-old man has been charged in connection to a fatal shooting that happened in Akron in July.
Jontae Watkins, who is already in jail on unrelated charges, was charged with murder on Tuesday in connection to the death of 34-year-old Ernestine Stallings.
The arrest came after Akron police executed a search warrant at a home on Stoner Avenue. During the search, officers seized drugs and over $33,000 in cash.
Police responded to the 2000 block of West Market Street on July 3, at 1:30 p.m. after receiving calls for a woman being shot. Upon arriving, they found a citizen rendering first aid to Stallings. The victim was taken by EMS to Cleveland Clinic Akron General Medical Center where she died.
Akron police say that early in the investigation they identified a person of interest in the "senseless murder," but continued to gather information, including conducting interviews.
