AKRON, Ohio — Soap Box Derby races have been held in communities across the United States for decades.
This Saturday, July 23, more than 300 boys and girls ages 7-20, will represent their hometowns to compete in the 84th running of the FirstEnergy All-American Soap Box Derby at Akron's Derby Downs
To earn the right to compete in the championship on Saturday, they had to win in their individual towns or by accumulating points in a series of rally competitions across the U.S. since last summer.
Racers compete based on their ages and construction skills. Boys and girls from 7-13 compete in Stock Car division. Kids 9-18 are in the Super Stock division, and lastly, competitors from 10-20 are in the Masters division.
Division champs will compete for $36,000 in college scholarships provided by the Bill Speeg Memorial Scholarship Fund.
It's not just about race day: The competitor's arrive with their families about a week ahead of time for days of fun before the big race.

Monday, July 18:
Ceremony honoring participating champions held at E.J. Thomas Hall at the University of Akron.
Tuesday, July 19-Thursday, July 21:
Participants spend much of the week at Derby Downs for car weigh-ins and preliminary races.
Friday, July 22:
The National Super Kids Classic, a race for special needs children, held at Akron Derby Downs.
Saturday, July 23:
STEM Fair, opening ceremonies and award ceremony. Race day!
