AKRON, Ohio — Daryeus Jones, an Akron man, learned his fate during a sentencing hearing on Friday in connection with a 2022 murder.
Summit County Common Pleas Court Judge Susan Baker Ross sentenced the 20-year-old to 21.5-27 years in prison for the murder of 16-year-old Jamarian Coffey.
“This case is tragic, with a young life taken. The community is safer with Dareyus Jones and Domonic Herring locked up. Thank you to my assistant prosecutors and Akron Police for all their hard work on this case,” said Summit County Prosecutor Elliot Kolkovich in a statement.
Previously, on July 29, Jones pled guilty to the following charges:
- Conspiracy to commit aggravated murder with a gun specification
- Aggravated robbery with a gun specification
- Felonious assault
- Improper handling of firearm in motor vehicle with gun specification
- Carrying a concealed weapon
CASE DETAILS
The incident dates back to Oct. 22, 2022, when Jones and Domonic Herring met up with Coffey and another teen on Jefferson Avenue near West Exchange Street. Officials say that the four walked together for several blocks to Dodge Avenue near West Exchange when Jones and Herring confronted the teens and shot Coffey several times. Coffey later died as a result of his injuries.
On Oct. 19, 2023, Judge Baker Ross sentenced Herring to 14-16.5 years in prison after he pleaded guilty to the following:
- Aggravated robbery with a gun specification
- Aggravated robbery with a gun specification
