AKRON, Ohio — Staff members at Akron's Garfield Community Learning Center (CLC) discovered a gun in a student's bookbag during a routine check on Monday.
The check was administered by bag scanning equipment. According to a statement from Akron Public Schools, an academy principal was the one who discovered the gun.
Akron police were notified of the incident. Neither the school, nor the police have revealed if the student was arrested and charged with a crime at this time.

"This morning, at Garfield CLC during routine checks on our school’s bag scanning equipment, an academy principal discovered a loaded firearm in a scholar’s book bag. The weapon was immediately confiscated, and Akron police were promptly notified.
"The safety and well-being of our scholars and staff are our top priorities. We take incidents such as this seriously and are grateful for the swift action taken by our staff and law enforcement.
"Our school security protocols were followed precisely, and we will continue to review and enhance our safety measures to ensure a secure learning environment for everyone."
The student's identity has not been released. The incident remains under investigation.
