Akron to install dozens of speed tables, solar speed limit signs in effort to reduce speeding: See a list of where they will be located

Will any of these new speed tables or solar speed limit signs be placed near your area? Check the list to find out.

AKRON, Ohio — As Akron Mayor Shammas Malik says “speeding is consistently ranked as one of the number one concerns” for residents, the city will begin installing 30 temporary speed tables and 40 more solar speed limit signs this month “to mitigate speeding in residential neighborhoods.”

SPEED TABLES IN AKRON

“Speed tables are raised areas placed at mid-block points across roadways and are designed to limit the speed at which vehicles travel,” as explained by Mayor Malik’s office. “Unlike speed bumps, tables have tapered ends and long flat tops to accommodate the entire wheelbase of most passenger cars. Akron’s tables consist of interlocking pieces made from recycled rubberized material and will be bolted and glued into place on street surfaces.”

The city reports an overall reduction in speeding on streets where speed tables have already been placed since 2020 with an average decrease of 3-6 mph.

How were all of these locations picked for the speed tables and speed limit signs? Mayor Malik’s office says it was based on resident requests, coordination with Akron City Council, city departments and organizations like METRO RTA and Akron Public Schools.

“Safety will always be our number one priority and addressing speeding is just one way we are tackling this concern,” according to the city’s press release.
