CLEVELAND — The Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating a single-vehicle motorcycle crash that killed a Geauga County man in Ashtabula County on Friday evening.
According to the OSHP, a 2003 Honda motorcycle driven by Thompson resident Aaron R. Atwell, 34, lost control and drove off the side of Footville Richmond Road in Trumbull Township and hit a tree just before 8 p.m. Friday.
Troopers say Atwell was not wearing a helmet and that alcohol or drugs "appear to be a factor" in the crash.
Atwell was pronounced dead at the scene.
The crash was the first of two fatal motorcycle crashes in Ashtabula County in which alcohol or drug use is suspected within the span of six hours. A crash in Williamsfield Township hours later at around 2 a.m. killed a passenger and seriously injured the driver. Both crashes remain under investigation by OSHP.
