CANTON, Ohio — The city of Canton is warning residents of an ongoing scam targeting residents.
The scam involves individuals trying to enter homes by falsely claiming they are third-part electrical inspectors.
“We’ve spoken with representatives from AEP and they’ve assured us that anytime they need to enter anyone’s residence they will always call to schedule an appointment in advance,” said City of Canton Mayor William V. Sherer II. “Never under any circumstances should you let these individuals into your home.
Canton City Hall began fielding reports of the scam on Monday, April 22. Affected residents say the individuals claimed a new Ohio law was passed allowing them to enter whether permission is granted or not.
“We are unaware of any such law that would permit these people access into the homes of our residents,” said Mayor Sherer.
City officials ask residents to refuse entry to these individuals, do not divulge any personal information and to call 911 if anyone feels unsafe.
