CLEVELAND — The Cleveland Division of Police is investigating a fatal shooting that took place early Thursday afternoon on the city's west side.
According to a release from the city, at approximately 12 p.m., officers responded to the 1900 block of West 96th Street for a report of a man shot.
Investigators say that two Cleveland Municipal Court Housing bailiffs were set to do an eviction and knocked on the door of a house. There was initially no response. The bailiffs and a maintenance employee tried to gain entry into the house, when a man came through the door with a blunt object. He assaulted both the maintenance worker and the bailiffs, then was shot by one of the two bailiffs.
The man was taken to MetroHealth Medical Center by Cleveland EMS, where he was pronounced dead. He has since been identified as 36-year-old Zachery Edwards Jr.
The incident remains under investigation. On Friday, the Cleveland Housing Court released the following statement: "A tragic incident during an eviction by Cleveland Housing Court Bailiffs yesterday unfortunately resulted in a man’s death. Judge W. Moná Scott and the Cleveland Housing Court wish to extend condolences to his family and friends. We will have no further comment while the investigation continues."
This is a developing situation. No other information is available at this time.
