3 arrested after 27-day-old baby boy dies in Cleveland

The child's 21-year-old mother and 22-year-old father are among those arrested.

CLEVELAND — Three people have been arrested after Cleveland police say a baby boy -- just 27 days old -- died earlier this week in what has been ruled a homicide with injuries from blunt force trauma to the head.

Cleveland police announced details of the three arrests Friday morning, saying those taken into custody include the child’s 21-year-old mother, 22-year-old father and an 18-year-old man who is identified by police as “a relative of the child’s father.”

3News reported Thursday the mother has been identified as Diamond Caldwell, while the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner listed the child as Deondre D. Hairston.

Names of the other two suspects have not yet been released.

The case dates back to approximately 9 a.m. Tuesday, July 4, when Cleveland police say officers responded to MetroHealth Medical Center for a deceased infant at the hospital.

“On arrival, officers learned the child had been transported to the hospital by private auto,” police said. “Members of the homicide unit responded to the hospital and to the child’s home for investigation.”

The case was ruled a homicide the following day.

“The matter remains under investigation,” the Cleveland Police Department added.
