COLUMBUS, Ohio — Following the tragic death of Cleveland veteran firefighter Johnny Tetrick, Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine is ordering flags to fly at half-staff until sunset on the day of his funeral.
DeWine's office released the following statement on Sunday:
"In honor of the life and service of Cleveland Firefighter Johnny Tetrick, Governor DeWine has ordered that flags of the United States and the State of Ohio be flown at half-staff upon all public buildings and grounds throughout Cuyahoga County, and at the Ohio Statehouse, Vern Riffe Center, and Rhodes State Office Tower in Columbus. Flags shall remain lowered until sunset on the day of his funeral.
"All other public buildings and grounds throughout the state may fly the flags of the United States and the State of Ohio at half-staff at their discretion for the same time period."
Tetrick tragically passed away on Saturday night while responding to a crash on I-90 East in Cleveland. While working with crews, a vehicle struck and killed Tetrick in a hit-and-run.
The suspect, a 40-year-old man from Cleveland, has since been arrested in connection to the alleged hit-and-run.
At this time, funeral details for Tetrick have not been released.
City officials in Cleveland have shared their sadness and condolences regarding Tetrick's passing.

“I am saddened to learn of the death of Cleveland firefighter Johnny Tetrick and extend my sincere condolences to his family, friends, and fellow firefighters,” said Mayor Bibb. “Firefighter Tetrick was devoted to his work as a first responder and was a much-loved member of his family and his community. Our prayers go out to his entire family as the city mourns the loss of a colleague and a dedicated public servant."

“This is a tragedy. A tragedy for Firefighter Tetrick’s family and friends, but also for the Division of Fire and the city of Cleveland,” said Council President Blaine A. Griffin. “We offer our deepest condolences to his family.”
