CLEVELAND — The Ohio State Highway Patrol (OSHP) is investigating a fatal crash Thursday afternoon on I-480 in Cleveland.
According to officials, the incident began around 2 p.m. when troopers from OSHP's Cleveland Post were called to a crash near the Valley View Bridge in Garfield Heights.
An initial investigation revealed that the driver of a 2004 Honda Civic was on I-480 West when he lost control and rotated in the middle of traffic. The Honda Civic, driven by 65-year-old Garfield Heights resident James Hess, was then hit by a 2022 Peterbilt semi-tractor trailer heading westbound. Officials say that Hess and the Honda Civic hen struck the concrete median divider on the highway.
Hess, who was wearing a seat belt, was killed in the accident. The driver of the tractor-trailer was also wearing a seat belt and was not injured.
ODOT crews and OSHP officials closed down I-480 West for two and a half hours to clean up the scene of the crash.
The crash remains under investigation at this time.
