Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District asks residents to stay away from water at Edgewater Beach

Thursday's storms led to discharge that 'exceeded the capacity of the sewer system.' It's the first overflow at the beach in almost a year.

CLEVELAND — Thursday's storms have had a wide-ranging impact across Northeast Ohio, and Cleveland's Edgewater Beach is no exception.

The Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District has posted an advisory asking residents to avoid the water and "wood debris" due to a combination of sewage and stormwater overflow. Officials say the heavy rains caused conditions that "exceeded the capacity of the sewer system."

Children, the elderly, and those with underlying health ailments are at particular risk of getting sick from the bad water. The advisory is expected to be in place for at least 48 hours as experts conduct bacteria tests, and it will only be lifted when results show E. Coli levels below federal and state advisory standards.

This is the first overflow incident at Edgewater since August of 2022. The Sewer District says recent improvements to the system have greatly improved the overall quality of the water.
