CLEVELAND — If your weekend plans included a swim at one of Lake Erie’s beaches, officials with the National Weather Service have issued a Beach Hazards Statement that urges everybody to stay out of the water for now due to a high risk for rip currents at many local swimming spots.
The National Weather Service in Cleveland says these conditions are expected today through Saturday with impacts at the following beaches:
- Huntington Beach
- Edgewater Park
- Euclid Beach
- Headlands Beach
- Fairport Harbor
- Kelleys Island
- Lakeview Park Beach
- Lakeshore Park
- Conneaut
- Presque Isle
The Beach Hazards Statement from the National Weather Service includes lakeshore communities within Cuyahoga, Lorain, Lake, Ashtabula and Erie counties.
So what should you do if you get stuck in a rip current? Here’s expert advice as outlined by a Facebook post from the National Weather Service in Cleveland:
- Don’t fight the current
- Swim out of the current, then to shore
- If you can’t escape, float or tread water
- If you need help, call or wave for assistance
