US Marshals: Cleveland man arrested for allegedly shooting, setting victim on fire

Michael H. Hurley, 37, was arrested Friday morning, months after Cleveland firefighters found a woman with a gunshot wound while extinguishing a fire on May 8.
The Cleveland Division of Police says a female was found with a gunshot wound in the house that caught fire near East 88th Street and Hough Avenue.

CLEVELAND — A Cleveland man accused of shooting a person before setting the victim on fire in the city's Hough neighborhood in May was arrested Friday morning, the U.S. Marshals Service announced.

Michael H. Hurley, 37, was located by members of the Marshals Service's Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force at a home in the 2700 block of Lancashire Road in Cleveland Heights. He was arrested and transported into Cleveland police custody. According to court records, Hurley has been charged with aggravated murder.

A homicide investigation began after Cleveland firefighters, while extinguishing a fire in the 1700 block of East 88th Place on May 8, found a woman upstairs in the residence who had died from a gunshot wound. An autopsy indicated the victim had been shot in the head, according to the Marshals Service. The Marshals Service said Hurley was "later identified as being involved in the incident."

In a statement, U.S. Marshal Pete Elliott called the investigation and arrest "another example of the outstanding efforts put forth by the detectives of the Cleveland Division of Police Homicide Unit."

"Their work led to the identification of this violent suspect, which ultimately resulted in a safe arrest by our task force members."
