CLEVELAND — There's a new sheriff in town.
Cuyahoga County Executive Armond Budish swore in Christopher Paul Viland as the new county sheriff on Wednesday.
Viland has 33 years of experience in law enforcement, and most recently, he served as Police Inspector General for the City of Cleveland's Department of Public Safety, Division of Police.
He also was a police officer in Solon and worked his way through the ranks to become the Solon Police Chief from 2011 until 2019.
Viland was appointed to the position back in January 2021. At the time, County Executive Budish said, “With more than 33 years of experience, Christopher is a proven leader in the fields of law enforcement and criminal justice. His commitment to the safety of our residents through his roles with the City of Cleveland and the City of Solon prove that he would be a great fit as Cuyahoga County Sheriff.”
Viland has also served in a variety of other roles in law enforcement, including patrol officer, detective, patrol sergeant, and patrol lieutenant.
“I look forward to serving the residents of Cuyahoga County as Sheriff,” said Sheriff Viland. “As Cuyahoga County Sheriff, I am committed to keeping our residents and communities safe and am pleased to work with the jail administration and county administration as we continue to improve and maintain the progress that has been made in our county jail.”
Viland takes over for Lt. Joseph Greiner, who had been named interim sheriff. Lt. Greiner began with the county as a Deputy in 2012 and was promoted to Sergeant in 2017.
