CLEVELAND — An East Cleveland police officer has been taken to the hospital following a car crash Tuesday afternoon.
Chief Scott Gardner says the officer ran the license plates of a passing vehicle and found out they did not match the car in question, and a pursuit ensued. During the chase, a Honda turning out of a gas station struck a Hyundai near East 125th Street and St. Clair Avenue in the city of Cleveland, which in turn collided with the police cruiser. Neither of those cars was involved in the original chase.
The driver of the Hyundai ran away on foot, while both the officer and the Honda driver were transported to University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center for observation. Their exact conditions are unknown at this time, although officials indicated the woman had a cut on her arm.
The cruiser as well as the Hyundai sustained heavy damage in the crash. The car originally involved in the pursuit fled the scene.
The incident is under investigation.
EDITOR'S NOTE: An earlier version of this story listed the second victim as a male driver of the Hyundai. This was based on earlier information from the East Cleveland Police Department and has since been corrected.
