The overflow happened on Saturday morning following a large storm that exceeded the capacity of the sewer system, resulting in the discharge of a combination of sewage and stormwater into Lake Erie.

Officials are asking visitors, particularly children and the elderly, as well as individuals with health problems, to avoid contact with the water and wood debris.

On Sunday, the water quality test for Edgewater Beach came back as poor due to potentially harmful bacteria from the overflow.

Crews from the sewer district are going to sample water twice daily, once in the morning and once in the afternoon, at 10 locations at Edgewater Beach. The samples will determine if the E. coli bacteria levels are elevated. Once the samples are below the federal and state advisory standards, the advisory will be lifted and the twice-a-day sampling will be stopped.

This incident marks the second overflow incident in the past 10 days at Edgewater. On Thursday, July 20, heavy rains caused conditions that "exceeded the capacity of the sewer system."
