Inmate at Cuyahoga County Jail accidentally put on parole

When the inmate went for a meeting with his parole officer, the officer realized the inmate should be in jail and was returned.

CLEVELAND — Officials are investigating after yet another problem at the already-troubled Cuyahoga County Jail.

A county spokesperson says on Friday an inmate was 'inadvertantly put on parole.'

When the inmate went for a meeting with his parole officer, the officer realized the inmate should be in jail and was returned.

This comes about a month after another inmate escaped. Ferdinand Torres-Vargas escaped the jail on domestic violence charges on September 4. The jail was placed on emergency lockdown while Torres-Vargas was at large. Back in 2015, Torres-Vargas was the focus of another escape, which happened when he was in the custody of corrections officers.

Nine inmates have died at the Cuyahoga County Jail since the start of 2018. The facility has since found itself at the center of a massive scandal involving alleged corruption and mistreatment of inmates. A scathing report from the U.S. Marshals service was followed by a failed state inspection, and numerous lawsuits have been filed accusing operators of denying inmates medical assistance, forcing inmates to sleep on the floor, and even serving food with bugs in it.

In August, Associate Warden Eric Ivey pleaded guilty to lying to authorities investigating the death of an inmate. As part of his plea deal, Associate Warden Eric Ivey agreed to resign his position and cooperate with ongoing investigations into the conditions at the jail.
