Man dies in custody after suffering 'medical emergency' at Cuyahoga County Jail following arrest by Cleveland Police

EMS officials took the suspect to MetroHealth where he later died.

CLEVELAND — Update: The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner's Office has ruled that Ashraf Aljaf's death was accidental and came as a result of "acute cocaine and methamphetamine toxicity."

A man who suffered a medical emergency shortly after being arrested by Cleveland Police passed away on Tuesday, Oct. 11.

According to Cuyahoga County spokesperson Mary Louise Madigan, the man was arrested and was being taken to the Cuyahoga County jail's sally port in the basement of the Justice Center.

Cleveland Police and the suspect arrived at the Justice Center around 9:45 p.m. on Tuesday. 

Prior to being booked, the suspect had a "medical emergency" when he got out of the car. EMS officials took the suspect to MetroHealth, where he later died. 

Officers and a registered nurse with the Cuyahoga County Jail gave CPR to the suspect and administered Narcan. 

The suspect who died in custody was identified as 33-year-old Ashraf Aljaf. 

According to Cleveland Police, the man was taken into custody after a domestic violence incident on Tyler Avenue. 

Madigan said there was no use of force during the initial arrest. The Cuyahoga County Sheriff's Office is investigating the death of the man. 

At this time, the cause of death has not been released and is pending autopsy results.
