DRY RIDGE, Ky. — Two Northeast Ohioans were killed in a car crash in Kentucky last week after police say they were struck by an alleged drunk driver.
The Grant County (KY) Coroner's Office confirmed to 3News that 32-year-old Joshua Turza from Avon and 30-year-old Meagan Spurgeon of North Olmsted died as a result of the June 9 crash on I-75 just after 11 p.m.
According to the Kentucky State Police, 47-year-old Jody Miller is in custody and facing the following charges:
- Operating motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol
- Vehicular homicide when under the influence of alcohol
- Wanton endangerment
- Fleeing or evading police
- Speeding 26 mph over/greater
Kentucky State Police officials say a trooper observed a black BMW driven by Miller speeding on I-75 in Grant County. After the BMW "failed to stop reaching excessive speeds," the trooper "lost sight of the vehicle and discontinued a pursuit," KSP noted in its report.
The trooper found the BMW after it had apparently struck a silver Kia about five miles down the road. Turza and Spurgeon were pronounced dead at the scene.
According to the GoFundMe pages for Turza and Spurgeon, the two were in a relationship and had dropped Spurgeon's daughter off at a summer camp in Kentucky prior to the crash.
