SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio — Police are investigating following the shooting death of a 10-year-old boy late Friday afternoon in South Euclid.
Officers were called to a home on the 4200 block of Bexley Boulevard around 5:30 p.m. and found the child dead inside. While local and state detectives are still looking into the matter, early information indicates the child was playing with a loaded handgun when it accidently went off, killing him.
The victim has been identified as Eion Boyette, a student at Greenview Middle School. Authorities say counselors will be made available when his South Euclid-Lyndhurst classmates return from Easter break Tuesday.
"Our deepest condolences go out to the Boyette family and we ask that they be given privacy during this difficult time," South Euclid Police Chief Joe Mays said in a statement.
