BURTON, Ohio — Investigators from the Ohio State Fire Marshals (SFM) office are working with local crews to find out why a fire broke out at the Fat Daddy of Burton restaurant in Geauga County.
Officials say the two-alarm fire broke out Wednesday in the attic some time around 10 p.m. According to a Facebook post from the Burton Volunteer Fire Department, the building sustained extensive fire, smoke and water damage. "Two alarms were transmitted due the interior configuration of the building bringing multiple mutual aid companies in from throughout Geauga County to control the fire. The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Geauga County Fire Investigation Unit and loss values are unknown at this time."
By 11:30 p.m., firefighters had managed to extinguish the flames, but were still searching for possible hotspots. The Ohio Department of Commerce told 3News on Thursday morning that SFM investigators were at the scene of the fire with the Geauga County Fire Investigation Unit and local departments.
According to a Friday statement from the Ohio Department of Commerce, the fire originated within the hostess area on the first floor. The blaze caused extensive damage to the first floor and components of the roof.
The exact cause of the fire remains undetermined and under investigation.
Fat Daddy opened in October of 2020 in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic, and specializes in using food and drink products from around Geauga County. The location has emphasized its Lenten fish fries and had been preparing a special menu for St. Patrick's Day next week.
