Retired Painesville firefighter dies from coronavirus

After starting out as a Painesville meter reader, he served as a city firefighter for 24 years.

PAINESVILLE, Ohio — The Painesville Fire Department is mourning the loss of one of their own.

The department announced that retired Firefighter Anthony "Darnell" Davis passed away last week from complications of coronavirus. He had served with the crew for 24 years.

"Tony dedicated his life to the protection of the people in his community and as a final act of his life, wishes to use his tragic passing to make sure his community is safe." a Facebook post from the department read. "Tony was not just a coworker to us, but a good friend. Please honor his memory by being safe."

A graduate of Painesville Harvey High School, Davis started out as a city meter reader before becaming a firefighter in September of 1991. He retired in June of 2015, and was remembered for his singing as well as "knowing everyone" in Painesville.

The city is asking residents who need emergency assistance to report any COVID-19 symptoms to the dispatcher when they call for help. Davis' family is also emphasizing safe practices during this pandemic.
