ELYRIA, Ohio — The Elyria Police Department is investigating a fatal crash involving a suspected drunk driver that happened on Sunday night.

According to a release from Lt. Bill Lantz, the incident happened at around 10 p.m. at the intersection of North Abbe Road and State Route 57.

Upon arrival, Elyria police say they determined that a 2011 Ford Escape was traveling southbound on N. Abbe Rd. approaching SR 57. At the same time, a 1999 Ford Explorer was heading north on SR 57 toward N. Abbe Road. Both vehicles went into the intersection, where the front of the Explorer struck the driver's side of the Escape.

Elyria police officials say the 50-year-old female driver of the Escape was pronounced deceased at the scene. The Lorain County Coroner’s office was contacted and responded to assist in the investigation. The victim's name has not yet been released.

The driver of the Explorer, 41-year-old Joshua Thompson, was transported along with his 40-year-old passenger to University Hospitals Elyria Medical Center with "unknown injuries."

According to Lantz, the "preliminary investigation" by Elyria police determined that Thompson "failed to stop for the red light at the intersection and collided with the Escape. Following the collision, Thompson’s vehicle continued in the northbound lane and overturned onto its roof. Alcohol is suspected to be a factor in the crash, and Thompson has been charged with Operating a Vehicle Impaired (OVI)."

Police add that more charges are anticipated.
