Elyria Police officers responded to a home in the 200 block of Kenny Brook Lane at around 11:45 p.m. Saturday after receiving a phone call that a man "killed his family and was going to kill himself."

Upon arriving at the scene, officers forced entry into the locked home where they discovered four dead family members inside.

Police provided new details on Monday morning in which they identify the four people who died as follows:

  • 92-year-old Bernadette A. Steadman
  • 69-year-old James C. Steadman
  • 60-year-old Lisa B. Steadman
  • 34-year-old Matthew J. Steadman

Police say all four people had "sustained what appeared to be gunshot wounds."

"Initial findings indicate this incident appears to be a 'murder-suicide' with Mr. James Steadman being the suspect," Elyria police said Monday. "The Elyria Police Department and Lorain County Coroner's Office continue to investigate this incident."

3News spoke with neighbor Ron Wells in the aftermath of the apparent murder-suicide. "They (the Steadmans) seemed like such nice people. I just can't comprehend this actually happened. I just don't understand it."

Wells also recalled a conversation he had with James Steadman. "He kept telling me over and over he was so tired, so wore out. He didn't know what to do. I told him to try to get some help."

Anyone with information on the incident is asked to contact Detective Kasperovich at 440-326-1213 or zkasperovich@cityofelyria.org.
