LORAIN, Ohio — A school safety officer at Lorain High School has been placed on paid administrative leave following his handling of a student altercation.
The incident occurred between students in the female restroom on Thursday, Aug. 25. At the time, the school said that the Safety Officer was able to end the student’s altercation and subsequently handle the student’s disciplinary process appropriately.
Later, district officials learned of a cell phone video that showed the Safety Officer’s actions while addressing the altercation that was not included in the initial incident report. After viewing the video, the district placed the Safety Officer on paid administrative leave pending an internal investigation regarding the use of excessive force.
The district says that it will take any appropriate measures following a full investigation. The Lorain Police Department and Lorain County Children Services have also been notified of the incident and the district says that it will cooperate fully as needed.
"The district takes the safety and well-being of our students very seriously, and district officials have been in contact with the student and family," the district said in a statement.
