A new bill would allow Ohioans to keep their drivers licenses for eight years

Republican Representative Derek Merrin says this will cut down on long BMV lines. Is it worth it to be stuck with the same photo for almost a decade?

CLEVELAND — If you're sick of waiting in long lines at the Bureau of Motor Vehicles every four years, you might be happy to learn that there's a new bill that could make it possible for you to avoid the BMV for up to eight years.

A new bill introduced by Republican Representative Derek Merrin would all people to wait eight years before being required to renew their drivers license.

Merrin said that people on the eight-year plan could also save $1 in fees over those who now renew every four years.

Currently it costs $25.75 to renew your drivers license in Ohio. If you renew it within 90 days of its expiration date, your new license will be valid for four years. If you renew earlier, however, you'll have to go back in three years, according to the BMV website.

There are currently 19 states that already allow drivers to get a license that remains valid for 8 years.

Merrin says this will cut down on long BMV lines. On today's Lunch Break with Jay Crawford, Jay, Besty Kling and Stephanie Haney chewed over the pros and cons of this move, including being stuck with the same photo for eight years.
