Ohio BCI investigating after Tuscarawas County deputies shoot man who allegedly pointed gun at them

The Tuscarawas County Sheriff's Office says the man pointed a gun at deputies who then opened fire.

TUSCARAWAS COUNTY, Ohio — A 41-year-old man was taken to the hospital Thursday night after he was shot when two Tuscarawas County Sheriff's deputies opened fire while responding to a call of “an intoxicated male shooting a gun” in the 1900 block of Wainwright Road shortly after 9:30 p.m.

The Tuscarawas County Sheriff’s Office says the caller indicated that he saw the man shooting in the direction of his own home where his wife and children were present.

Upon their arrival, deputies reported encountering the man who was in his garage with the door up.

“Deputies could immediately see a gun in his hand and began giving him commands to drop the gun,” according to a press release from the Tuscarawas County Sheriff. “The man did not drop the gun and instead pointed the gun at Deputies and two Deputies fired on him striking him in the arm and leg.”

The weapon was secured as the deputies began rendering first aid, according to the sheriff’s office.

The man was taken to the hospital where he was listed in stable condition. His injuries are not believed to be life-threatening. His name was not released.

Neither of the deputies nor the suspect’s family were hurt during the incident.

The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) has been called to investigate the actions of both deputies, which the Tuscarawas County Sheriff says is standard procedure.
