Man killed by police after allegedly charging at Brunswick officers, murdering mother

Authorities say the man attacked and killed his mother with a knife.

BRUNSWICK, Ohio — A 30-year-old man and his mother are both dead following an incident in Brunswick.

Authorities said the situation started around 11:06 p.m. Thursday when officers responded to a home in the 3000 block of Alda Parkway where a man with a history of schizophrenia was reportedly threatening his mother with a knife.

After making attempts to contact the occupants inside the home, officers gained entry and "fatally wounded" the man when he allegedly charged at them.

The suspect was later identified as 30-year-old William Sears. Investigators said it was determined that Sears "attacked and killed his mother with a knife." She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Ohio Attorney General's Bureau of Criminal Investigation is now investigating the incident.

The Brunswick Police Department was assisted by multiple agencies, including the Brunswick Fire Department, Brunswick Hills police and fire, Medina County Sheriff's office, Ohio State Highway Patrol and the Valley City Fire Department.

No additional details were immediately available.
