WADSWORTH, Ohio — The Wadsworth Police Department and the Medina County SWAT team say that an hours long standoff with a barricaded suspect has ended.
According to police, the incident began on Christmas Day when officers responded to 119 Water Street for a domestic violence call. The male resident, now identified as 50-year-old Joel Maurer, was unable to be found and an arrest warrant was issued for domestic violence.
On Thursday, police determined that the suspect had returned home and attempted to make contact with him over several hours, but Maurer refused to surrender.
Maurer had allegedly threatened police officers in the past and officials found that the suspect had at least one rifle in his home, therefore, members with the Medina County SWAT team were called to the scene.
After more than two hours, SWAT entered the home and found Maurer hidden inside of a wall. Officers searched the home and discovered a loaded AR-15, numerous loaded rifle magazines, and containers filled with ammunition.
The 50-year-old was arrested and charged with having weapons under disability and domestic violence.
The matter remains under investigation by police officials.
