Maple syrup season now flowing in Northeast Ohio

This weekend kicks off the Maple Tour of Northeast Ohio, and the syrup and sugar makers are ready.

MIDDLEFIELD, Ohio — It takes a lot of work to make maple candy sweet, but only a few seconds to be enjoyed.

"Sometimes I find myself waking up at two in the morning turning on vacuum pumps or turning off vacuum pumps. Mother Nature really determines our schedule. There's not really anything we can do to make the sap run," Seldon Seen Farm owner Kevin Holy said.

Some students are at Sugar Valley Maple to hear now the sticky sap that comes from trees turns into the golden and gooey topper for their pancakes.

"One thing I like about Maple is I like to promote the health benefits of it too, you get the other syrups in the stores it's zero maple it's all processed maple. This is natural maple syrup that your body can process better," Sugar Valley Maple owner James Miller said.

This weekend is your chance to check out how it's done.

Sugarmakers like Miller and Holy are participating in the Maple Tour of Northeast Ohio where you can go see, smell and taste the experience for yourself.

"We make all our syrup during about a 6 week period, so those 6 weeks are kind of nervous we try to  get the maximum production out and like James said, we don't sleep much, but we have to do what we have to do to make it happen," Holy said.
